Fares 2003 Special Coverage

Fares 2003 Special CoverageForty-First President to Speak on the Middle East.

Medford/Somerville, Mass. [01.13.03] Former President George H.W. Bush will deliver the 2003 Issam M. Fares Lecture, University President Lawrence S. Bacow announced today. The lecture will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Wed., Feb. 26 at the Gantcher Family Sports and Convocation Center.

"We are honored that former President Bush will be sharing his insight and wisdom on world affairs as the 2003 Fares lecturer," said President Bacow. "He is uniquely suited to comment on the challenges in foreign affairs that our world is confronting."

The annual Fares lecture series began in 1993. The popular event has since drawn a host of high-level speakers including President William Jefferson Clinton, Colin Powell, Margaret Thatcher, James Baker, George Mitchell and former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing.

Bush - who marshaled a 30-nation coalition to oppose Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm - was elected president in 1988, following eight years as vice president under President Ronald Reagan. The former director of the Central Intelligence Agency and the United States Representative to the United Nations, Bush has a distinguished 30-year career in public service.

Ticket information for the Feb. 26 lecture will be announced closer to the event.

The Fares Lecture Series is supported by an endowment from the Fares Foundation that enables Tufts University to implement a program for promoting Middle Eastern studies in the humanities, social sciences and arts, including history, political science, economics, sociology, anthropology, demographic studies and languages.
