The Real Apprentice

The Real ApprenticeA Tufts graduate is getting a crash course in the world of Donald Trump by heading up the online university named for the famous billionaire.

Medford/Somerville, Mass. [07.14.05] Not many people can count Donald Trump as a business partner. But when Michael Sexton had the idea of starting an online educational service, the Tufts graduate tapped a connection and got the billionaire real estate developer on board as the namesake of Trump University, which seeks to train budding tycoons on the finer principles of success.

"A partner of mine knew Donald and thought the idea was great, pitched it to him, and he loved it," Sexton told The Journal News of New York.

Trump had been mulling an online educational endeavor of his own before Sexton came calling with his vision. According to the newspaper, the Trump University website has gotten 8 million hits since its launch on May 23.

"We're very, very happy with the reaction," Sexton told The Journal News.

The faculty of the university, which does not offer credit or degrees, includes professors from Dartmouth and Columbia University and offers courses in marketing, real estate and entrepreneurship. Additional courses in negotiation, communication and leadership are planned.

"Fundamentally, our philosophy is there are so many great professors out there that so few people have access to. We want to take that great knowledge and really distribute it out to the people that need it the most, and online learning is really the most efficient way to do that," Sexton told The Journal News.

After graduating from Tufts, Sexton received his MBA from Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business and went on to work at Accenture, a management consulting company. After heading up a business development firm, Sexton got the idea to start an online education business.

"Michael's a very brilliant young man who has done an amazing job in a short period of time with Trump University," Trump told The Journal News.

The billionaire is certain that Trump University, with Sexton at the helm, will become yet another success in his sprawling business empire.

"It's a great feeling — a great education," Trump told The Journal News. "People will learn, in my opinion, how to be successful if they go through the Trump University course."
