Tufts Celebrates Fourth Annual Community Day

Tufts Celebrates Fourth Annual Community DayDespite rainy weather, Tufts’fourth annual Community Day celebration on Oct. 1 was a shining success.

Medford/Somerville, Mass. [10.16.06] On a soggy Sunday, about 500 community members from Medford and Somerville gathered on campus for Tufts’fourth annual Community Day, co-sponsored by the two cities. Despite the rain, a festive atmosphere surrounded the activities, which included a barbeque, exhibits, arts and crafts, and musical performances.

This year’s Community Day featured performances from student groups, including the Irish Step Dancers, the Amalgamates, BEATs and Sarabande. Children had their faces painted, made necklaces, painted pumpkins and crafted crowns with help from the Leonard Carmichael Society (LCS), a student-run community service organization, as well as dozens of student volunteers.

Visitors viewed displays by faculty, staff and students from the Tufts-Museum of Fine Arts Program;Tisch Library, which was celebrating its tenth anniversary;the Music Department, and other Tufts departments and organizations. Also popular was a raffle for books written by Tufts authors.

Groups from Medford and Somerville—including the Medford Fire Department, Medford Health Matters, the Somerville Center for Adult Learning and the Somerville Museum—set up tables on the academic quad alongside student organizations.

“The enthusiasm and hardiness of the attendees and volunteers was impressive and made this day great," said Susan Grassl, an administrative assistant in Tufts' Community Relations department who helped organize the event. She extended her thanks to all those who made the day possible.
