Homecoming 2009

Homecoming 2009Tufts students and alumni flocked to campus for Homecoming festivities on a crisp, sunny autumn weekend.

Medford/Somerville, Mass. [10.13.09] Jumbos who came back to campus Oct. 9-11 for Homecoming were treated to a weekend full of festivities and victories.

On Friday, the weekend kicked off with the annual Tufts Athletics award ceremony. Roberta "Bobbi" Gibb, a pioneer in women's marathon running, received the 2009 Distinguished Achievement Award, while eight Tufts students also received rewards from the Athletics Department.

Saturday's sporting events brought their fair share of excitement. In the marquee football matchup against Bowdoin, the Jumbos took the Polar Bears into overtime on a 37-yard field goal by Tufts sophomore kicker Adam Auerbach with 27 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Auerbach then kicked the winning 35-yard field goal in OT to seal the 25-22 victory.

Across campus, junior Tamara Brown was one of two Jumbo field hockey players to score a hat trick in a 7-0 win over Colby, becoming the Tufts field hockey program's all-time leading scorer with 98 points. With the win, the Jumbo field hockey squad improved to No. 3 in the nation with a 9-0 record.

In other athletics victories, the women's soccer team shut out Colby 3-0 and the top-ranked volleyball team improved to 19-1 with a 3-0 win over Colby. The men's soccer team suffered a tough overtime defeat to Colby. (See more Jumbo athletics updates.)

Among the special events taking place over the weekend were the first annual Jumbo Stampede 5K, organized by Tufts Alumni, and a bicycle ride from the Grafton campus to the Medford/Somerville campus, organized by Tufts Cycling.

Friday evening also brought the annual Homecoming a cappella concert, featuring the vocal stylings of the Amalgamates, Jackson Jills and Beelzebubs. This weekend was doubly special for the Amalgamates, who celebrate their 25th anniversary this month.
