Solomont Named Ambassador to Spain, Andorra

Solomont Named Ambassador to Spain, AndorraA Tufts graduate and trustee whose career has focused on the health care industry will shift his focus to the diplomatic stage if confirmed to the post.

Medford/Somerville, Mass. [08.10.09] On Aug. 6, President Barack Obama nominated Alan D. Solomont (A'70) to be the country's next ambassador to Spain and Andorra.

"I am deeply honored to be nominated, and, if confirmed, it will be a great privilege to serve," Solomont told The Boston Globe.

According to the Globe, Solomont's new position "will head the US mission in Spain, which serves as a diplomatic link to the Spanish government, a US ally, assists US businesses with trade issues, provides consular services to about 80,000 Americans who reside in Spain and another one million American tourists each year, and is involved with cultural and other exchange programs."

A resident of Weston, Mass., Solomont was an early supporter of the Obama campaign, chairing its New England steering committee.

Solomont has spent most of his professional career working in the venue of health and elder care. Co-founder of HouseWorks, a home care company that helps seniors remain independent, Solomont is also the chairman of Solomont Bailis Ventures, which invests in early-stage health care companies.

Since graduating from Tufts with a bachelor's degree in 1970, Solomont has remained an active member of the university community. Aside from the Board of Trustees, where he has served since 1999, Solomont has also co-chaired the Beyond Boundaries campaign and chaired the Advancement Committee.

Solomont also taught political science courses through Tisch College and the Department of Political Science, including a 2005 seminar on the Clinton presidency and seminars the past two fall semesters leading up to the 2008 presidential election.

Solomont has shown his dedication to public service as a member of numerous other non-profit boards. In February of this year, Solomont was elected chairman of the bipartisan board of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which oversees the AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America programs. He was first appointed to the corporation's board in 2000 by President Bill Clinton and reappointed by President George W. Bush in 2007.
