Graduating seniors on the Tufts softball team, playing in the national championships this weekend, celebrated Commencement early thanks to President Bacow.
Medford/Somerville, Mass. [05.16.09] For the seniors on the Tufts softball team, this weekend was shaping up to be bittersweet. While they would be headed to the NCAA Div. III championships in New Jersey with their teammates to vie for the national title, a first-round victory would mean missing Commencement ceremonies back on campus.
But thanks to President Lawrence S. Bacow, the senior leaders on the team can head into the tournament having already "graduated." The president invited the seniors to his office for a special ceremony on May 13 where they received some inspirational words before heading into the toughest stretch of their postseason.
The senior members of the team include infielder Danielle Lopez, outfielder Roni Herbst, pitcher Lauren Gelmetti, outfielder Alison Drobiarz, infielder Samantha Kuhles, outfielder Maya Ripecky, catcher Cara Hovhanessian and outfielder Laura Chapman.
Afterward, the seniors headed out to the Academic Quad, where President Bacow led them in a procession up to the stage where ceremonies will be held on Sunday.
Hopefully, their next ceremony will be to celebrate winning the national title, a goal they took one step toward by winning their first-round matchup against Cortland State on Friday, 3-1.
