Solomont Named Chair of National Service Organization

Solomont Named Chair of National Service OrganizationAs the newly elected chairman of the Corporation for National and Community Service agency, Tufts graduate and Trustee Alan Solomont aims “to usher in a new era of service” in the United States.

Medford/Somerville, Mass. [04.13.09] Tufts graduate and member of the board of trustees Alan D. Solomont has been elected chairman of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the nation's largest grant maker for volunteering and service. The Corporation engages more than four million Americans in service each year through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, VISTA, NCCC and Learn and Serve America programs, providing vital support for America's voluntary and nonprofit sector through grants, volunteers, training, research and other support.

A longtime veteran of the board, Solomont was elected chairman in February. First appointed to the board in 2000 by President Clinton and reappointed by President Bush in 2007, Solomont has helped set the overall policy and direction for the agency and its programs.

"Alan is the perfect chair for this moment," said outgoing chair Stephen Goldsmith at Solomont's appointment. "He brings the instincts of an entrepreneur, the passion of an organizer, the heart of a philanthropist and the Rolodex of an activist. The board is thrilled to have such a strong leader at this moment of unprecedented need and opportunity for national service."

Graduating from Tufts in 1970 with a degree in political science and urban studies, Solomont pursued independent studies abroad as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow and later earned a B.S. in nursing from the University of Lowell. He was elected to the Tufts Board of Trustees in 1999.

During his career, Solomont has spent a lot of time focusing on providing service to the country's aging population. After 15 years of service to the A.D.S. Group, an eldercare company that he founded, he then launched Solomont/Bailis Ventures, working on issues of health and eldercare.

An active member of the Democratic Party, Solomont has worked as the national finance chair of the Democratic National Committee and on a number of state and national campaigns, including the presidential campaigns of Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. In the 2004 election, Solomont helped orchestrate a major turnaround for Kerry's fundraising efforts.

Solomont serves on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Boston Private Bank and Trust Company; Angel Healthcare Investors, LLC; Boston Medical Center; The Jewish Fund for Justice; The New Israel Fund; Israel Policy Forum; Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly and the WGBH Educational Foundation.

As the new chair of the agency, Solomont noted that with the backing of President Obama, it is a "new era" for the service community.

"President Obama has called for a new era of service and responsibility, and Americans are ready to answer that call," said Solomont. "At this time of economic distress, we need more Americans to reach out and help. President Obama has a bold vision for service, and I am honored to chair this outstanding board as we work to usher in a new era of service in America."
