A Valuable Education

A Valuable EducationKiplinger's Personal Finance magazine names Tufts one of the best valued universities of 2009.

Medford/Somerville, Mass. [01.09.09] While families across the country are struggling financially during the current economic downturn, Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine says there is still hope for the college bound, thanks to universities like Tufts.

On Jan. 7, Kiplinger's announced its annual list of the top values in private colleges and universities, with Tufts ranking 19th among universities. Institutions making the list were ranked on their ability to "exemplify excellent academics while keeping costs to a minimum."

According to the article appearing in the February 2009 edition of the magazine, the average cost of a year at a private school has gone up 5.6 percent since the 2007-2008 school year.

"Meanwhile, colleges both rich and not-so-rich are cutting outlays to keep operations running and financial aid flowing to families hit by the economic downturn," the article states.

To determine which schools provide the best education while keeping tuition cost down, Kiplinger's looked at 600 different private institutions, measuring academic quality and affordability, with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total. The top 50 universities and liberal arts colleges were ranked separately, and schools were categorized based on the highest level and number of degrees offered.

Factors considered included admission rates, SAT or ACT scores of accepted students, the student/faculty ratio, graduation rate, total cost and average debt accrued at graduation.
