Last Week at Tufts…

A presidential candidate, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and an assortment of eminent scholars came to campus.

Medford/Somerville, Mass. [11.03.08] There is so much that happens at Tufts that it can be hard to keep up. Check out this roundup of the past week of campus happenings.

• Oct. 25: Lloyd N. Trefethen, fellow of the Royal Society and professor of numerical analysis at Oxford University, gave a talk entitled "Confessions of a Number Cruncher" as part of the Department of Mathematics' Norbert Wiener Lectures, held annually in honor of the 1909 Tufts graduate.

• Oct. 25: Third-party presidential candidate Ralph Nader came to the Medford/Somerville campus as part of a 21-stop, one-day tour of Massachusetts. Read more about his visit.

• Oct. 28: Sophomore field hockey player Tamara Brown was honored as NESCAC Player of the Week for scoring both goals in the Jumbos' 2-1 OT victory against Trinity on Oct. 25. The Jumbos (15-0), ranked No. 4 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Div. III poll, opened the first round of the NESCAC playoffs on Nov. 2 with a 5-1 win over Colby, with Brown chipping in a goal for the cause.

• Oct. 27: Michael Adas, the Abraham E. Voorhees professor of history and Board of Governors' chair at Rutgers, spoke as part of the semester-long Pearson Prentice Hall Seminar Series in Global History at Tufts, presented by the Boston Area Global History Consortium. Adas' area of study focuses on technology, material culture and religion.

• Oct. 28: Dr. Donald Green, professor of political science at Yale University, presented a talk entitled "The Science and Pseudoscience of Winning Elections." The event was sponsored by the Department of Political Science and the Dean's Office of Undergraduate Education.

• Oct. 29: ClimateFest 2008, a student-organized effort to spread awareness about sustainability issues, was held at the Campus Center. Adam Frank of the Climate Solutions Coalition and Fletcher School Professor William Moomaw spoke, and students enjoyed performances by Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, a band featuring four Tufts graduates, and the student performance groups BEATS and Traveling Treasure Trunk.

• Oct. 29: Emmy-nominated filmmaker Joshua Seftel (A'90) was on hand for a presentation of his film "War, Inc." a political satire starring Dan Aykroyd and John Cusack. The screening was presented by the Communications and Media Studies program. Read more about Seftel in Tufts Magazine.

• Oct. 29: Mary Richardson Professor of History Ayesha Jalal spoke at the School of Arts and Sciences Dean's Faculty Forum about her recent book, "Partisans of Allah: Jihad as Ethics, Jihad as War." Watch video of her talk and read more about her research.

• Oct. 29 and 30: Oct. 22 and 23: Alberto Mora, former General Counsel of the U.S. Navy, participated in an informal brown bag lunch conversation about "Terrorism and the Rule of Law" with the Tufts community as a part of a weekly speaker series on American foreign policy hosted by Ambassador John Shattuck through Tisch College.

• Oct. 31: Neil Allen of Allen Global Holdings, a member of The Fletcher School Board of Overseers, and Dr. Eliot Kalter of EM Strategies Inc., who spent 28 years with the International Monetary Fund, spoke at a seminar for The Fletcher School's Center for Emerging Market Enterprises on the facilitation of private sector access to emerging local capital markets worldwide.
