Parent Power

Parent PowerMore than 3,500 family members and guests flocked to the Medford/Somerville campus Oct. 17-19 to celebrate Parents Weekend.

Medford/Somerville, Mass. [10.27.08] Every fall, Parents Weekend provides an opportunity for undergraduates to bring their family to campus and share in the Tufts experience. This year was no different, as the Medford/Somerville campus was bustling with activity the weekend of Oct. 17-19.

The theme of this year's event was "New Leaders for a Changing World," featuring talks ranging from a discussion on engineering and sustainability with School of Engineering Dean Linda Abriola to a talk about developing wisdom in Tufts students by School of Arts and Sciences Dean Robert Sternberg.

A keynote by Jeff Berry, professor of political science, discussed presidential character, while an endnote by University Professor Sol Gittleman focused on where the religions of Abraham will lead us. Professors and student leaders also hosted short talks throughout the weekend.

"What we wanted to do was present different views of traditional and non-traditional leadership from across the academic spectrum," says Linda Levin-Scherz, assistant director of the Tufts Parents Program. "We also wanted our guests to go home having been challenged to think about leadership in new ways and to have a sense of how the views about leadership at Tufts break from some of the traditional models."

The weekend, graced by cool and sunny fall weather, also featured a host of cultural and athletic events. Learn more about them in this audio slideshow:
