A Soggy Success
The Jumbos were undaunted by a few raindrops as students and alumni enjoyed the festivities during Homecoming weekend.
Medford/Somerville, Mass. [09.29.08] A wet weekend didn't dampen the Jumbos' enthusiasm for victory this Homecoming weekend, as Tufts teams won three out of their four matchups against Bates College, including a 34-7 thrashing of the Bobcats by the Jumbo football squad.
The victory, Tufts' 23rd consecutive win over Bates going back to 1986, improved the football team's record to 2-0 overall. Scoring plays included a 60-yard run by senior tailback Will Forde, a 71-yard pass from junior quarterback Anthony Fucillo to senior wide receiver Stephen Black and a 48-yard interception return by junior safety Tom Tassinari.
The women's field hockey team, recently ranked in the top 10 of a national poll for the first time in their history, continued their winning start to the season with a 4-2 win over the Bobcats. The Jumbos scored three goals in the second half to secure the victory. Junior Amanda Russo netted two goals toward the cause.
On the soccer field, the Jumbos saw their one loss of the day, a 2-0 defeat of the men's team by the Bobcats. The loss was the first NESCAC defeat for the men, who now sit at 4-2-1 overall.
The women's soccer team, however, improved their record to 4-0-0 with a 2-0 win over Bates. Freshman Jamie Love-Nichols recorded her first career goal for the Jumbos. The women have yet to allow a goal this season.
Off the field, students and alumni converged on campus to cheer on the Jumbos and sample the delectable spread of food at Tailgaters' Village, while kids participated in crafts activities and face-painting.
