Soccer Wins NCAA New England Championship
Jumbos to host National Quarterfinal game
against William Smith on Saturday
Medford/Somerville,
Mass. - For the second time in three years, the Tufts University
women's soccer team is the NCAA New England Region Champion. Head
coach Martha Whiting's team posted a 3-1 victory over Wheaton
College in the NCAA Tournament Regional final at Middlebury College
on Sunday (Nov. 5).
Tufts,
whose 16-3-1 record marks the most victories in the program's
22-year history, now advances to the NCAA National Quarterfinals
- the elite eight. As the New England Region champion, the Jumbos
will host William Smith College (14-4-1), the Northeast Region
champ.
"Coming
into the season, I thought we could be pretty good," Tufts second-year
coach Martha Whiting said, "but then as the season went along,
we just focused on one game at a time and all of a sudden we find
ourselves in the national quarterfinals. I'm not sure I ever envisioned
we'd get this far."
Tufts
won the NCAA New England crown and hosted a national quarterfinal
game in 1998. The Jumbos lost to Ithaca College, 1-0 in two overtimes,
despite out-playing the Bombers.
