Medford/Somerville,
Mass. –
Speaking before a packed lecture hall at Tufts University, Michael
Dukakis praised Tufts’ commitment to public service and activism,
then called for the nation’s politicians to bring universal health
care to the United States.
The
former Massachusetts Governor was on campus to receive the 1999
Christopher Columbus Award, which honors outstanding individuals
whose actions exemplify the innovative thinking of Christopher Columbus
and the University’s commitment public service to society.
“I
am honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award,” said
Dukakis. “Tufts University and I share a commitment to teaching
the young people of our country the importance and value of innovation
and public service.”
Tufts
selected Dukakis, a three-term Governor of Massachusetts for his
initiatives in key areas including economic reform and healthcare.
“We are pleased to honor such an accomplished and dedicated individual,”
said University President DiBiaggio. “As Governor, Dukakis’ compassion
and innovation strengthened Massachusetts. He continues to represent
the leadership and innovative thinking that we encourage Tufts students
to embrace.”
Dukakis'
life long commitment to Massachusetts and its citizens is evident
throughout his political career. He was voted the most effective
governor in the nation by his colleagues in 1986. The Christopher
Columbus Discovery Legacy Award at Tufts University has been made
possible by a generous gift from former state Senator and Tufts
University graduate Louis Bertonazzi through the Massachusetts Christopher
Columbus Quincentennial Commission and Celebrate Discovery! Inc.,
its affiliated nonprofit organization.
