Boston,
Mass – A special health and nutrition-focused
Parade Magazine included some expert advice from several
Tufts faculty members. According to Miriam Nelson, professor of
Nutrition at Tufts University, “Muscles are a big key to staying
healthy longer. We start losing a third to a half-pound of muscle
in our mid 30s – so by the time we reach 90, we have only half the
muscle mass we did as adults.”
Nelson
suggests regular resistance-training, with hand-held weights or
a weight machine, for 20 minutes three times a week. “Exercise can
make a 70-year-old as strong and fit as a 40-year-old,” she adds.
Tufts
Medical School professor Jeffrey Blumberg also added expert advice
to the special issue. Commenting on the benefits of tea, he says,
“Not only is tea rich in riboflavins, but there’s also the substitution
effect: If you are drinking tea, you aren’t drinking another – possibly
unhealthy – beverage.”
