The Newest
Students From
Tufts University's Three Massachusetts Campuses
This
week, thousands of students from around the world began a new
stage in their college careers at Tufts. International, accomplished,
and extremely motivated, the first-year students at Tufts' seven
professional and graduate schools are an extremely talented
group. Who are they? Here's a quick glance:

Did you know the new class at Tufts' School of Nutrition,
Science and Policy represents 20 countries including Afghanistan,
Kenya, Ghana, China and Uganda?

The
newest students at Tufts' Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy
hail from 40 countries, including China, Italy and Thailand.
-
New
students from Tufts' School of Veterinary Medicine hail from
countries including Switzerland, Canada and Russia.
They
are accomplished students:

The
new students at Tufts' Nutrition School have degrees from
over 60 colleges and universities around the world, including
Tufts, the University of Glasgow, University of Nairobi, Seoul
National University, Harvard and Shanghai Medical University.

The
newest class at Tufts' School of Dental Medicine is the brightest
yet, posting the highest GPAs and test scores in the school's
history. In addition, they hail from
109 colleges and universities from around the world, including
Tufts, Georgetown, University of British Columbia and Cornell.

Tufts
undergraduates are the largest block of incoming students
at the Medical School.

Among
the entering class at Tufts' Fletcher School are eight returning
Peace Corps volunteers, three Fulbright Scholars and three
Muskie Fellows.
They
are talented and motivated professionals:

At
Tufts' Fletcher School, the newest students include a NATO
officer from Bosnia/Herzegovina, an AIDS educator from Malawi,
Africa, an editor from the China Daily and an investigator
of international economic crime from the New York District
Attorney's Office.

The
newest class at Tufts' Veterinary School includes an environmental
conservationist, architectural consultant, computer specialist,
CPA, surgeon and an English teacher.

What
do new students want to learn at Tufts' Nutrition School?
"My
interest in studying nutrition at Tufts is to add skills and
knowledge to my six years of work in the Sudan," wrote a student
from Kenya, who is enrolled in the Humanitarian Assistance
program. "I want to get a clearer understanding on how sustainable
food security can be achieved in a situation of perpetual
conflict and deteriorating weather patterns."
"I wish to explore ways to
foster equitable and environmentally sound agricultural practices
that adequately meet the nutritional needs of communities
in the developing world," wrote a student from Michigan enrolled
in the Agriculture, Food and Environment program.
"A former college rower, I now
compete in triathlons and hope to combine my interests of
nutrition and sport," wrote a Nutrition Communications student
from Massachusetts.

the new Dental School class has more women than any other
in the school's history? (Over 48 percent of the students
are female.)

That
the average age of an incoming Fletcher School student is
27?

That
the two most popular "home states" at Tufts' Medical School
are separated by over 2,600 miles? (They are Massachusetts
and California.)

That
male students comprise 29 perent of the Veterinary School's
entering class, up from only 17 percent last year.
