[Biography
| Honorary Degree]
Medford/Somerville,
Mass. [05-22-05] Kostas Karamanlis, distinguished Prime
Minister of the Hellenic Republic, twice a graduate of the Fletcher
School of Law and Diplomacy, you have achieved a position unique
in the 153-year history of this university. You are the first
alumnus of Tufts to be elected head of state, a profound accomplishment
for which we are extraordinarily proud. Your charismatic leadership
of the New Democracy party resulted in your election in 2004 as
prime minister, the youngest in Greece’s modern history.
Entrusted with the governance of the nation in which democracy
was born, you carry on an historic family legacy. Your resolute
commitment to education, economic development, and international
collaboration signal Greece’s emerging role as a leader
in the new Europe. Given your enormous responsibilities, we deeply
appreciate your affection and enthusiasm for your alma mater.
With boundless energy and gracious hospitality, you continue to
welcome Tufts into your life and contribute to the advancement
of this university. Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, it is a
distinct honor to welcome you back to your second home, and to
award you today your third degree from Tufts University, the Doctor
of Laws, honoris causa.
