Medford/Somerville,
Mass. [05-22-05] William McChord Hurt, acclaimed stage
and screen artist, recipient of the coveted Academy Award for
best actor, member of the Class of 1972, we happily welcome you
back to Tufts. Many of the graduates on this hill literally have
walked similar paths; all aspire to achieve comparable success
in their careers. Your painstaking commitment to excellence, boldness
in expression, and versatility in your work stand as an inspiration
to all, regardless of field. Tufts recognized your talent as an
actor early, twice awarding you the Goddard Rhetorical Prize while
you were a student. As an actor, you continue to embrace complex
roles that would test lesser talents. You extol the enduring beauty
of the classics on stage through passionate performance. Your
remarkable commitment to independent films underscores a deep
respect for diverse genres, and a true love and respect for your
craft. You are a free-thinking artist, boundless in talent and
outlook. Your superb work throughout a distinguished career has
been recognized with the highest honors, and your alma mater is
proud to join those who celebrate your extraordinary gifts. William
Hurt, it is my pleasure to present to you today, on this festive
homecoming, the degree of Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa.
