[Biography
| Honorary Degree]
Medford/Somerville,
Mass. [05-22-05] James O. Freedman, you are a gentle
man but a giant within the academy. Your peers admire you for
your courage and conviction, your eloquence and wisdom, your scholarship
and humanity. Your principled actions throughout your presidency
at Dartmouth College resonated across the nation, inspiring fellow
university presidents and influencing students and faculty well
beyond your campus. In the face of withering criticism, you defended
academic freedom, the cornerstone of American higher education,
to ensure that all voices are heard in the quest for understanding
and knowledge. You sought excellence and integrity in scholarship,
and celebrated the special contribution of the teacher-scholar.
In a nation transfixed by professionalism, you have passionately
advocated for the enduring value of a true liberal education.
You have responded to great personal challenges with candor and
courage, and in the process, have taught others how to lead with
dignity and humility. James Freedman, distinguished scholar and
author, acclaimed educator, beloved mentor and wise president,
it is my honor to present to you today the degree of Doctor
of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
