[Biography
| Honorary Degree]
Medford/Somerville,
Mass. [05-22-05] Tadatoshi Akiba, honorable Mayor of
the City of Hiroshima, Tufts welcomes you home with pride and
admiration. An educator at heart, you taught mathematics on this
campus for more than a decade before returning to your native
Japan. You entered politics, and you have advocated for education,
responsible stewardship of the environment, transparency in government,
and international collaboration to promote world peace. Ever the
teacher, you inspire new generations of global citizens to learn
from our collective past while investing generously in our collective
future. Tufts University embraces the principle of active, engaged
and effective citizenship. Mayor Akiba, your life’s endeavors
stand as a model for our graduates, to study broadly as you have
– from topology to the environment – and to exercise
talent fully for the good of society. May your success encourage
others to cross boundaries imposed by discipline, geography, politics
and culture. On the occasion of your joyous homecoming, in the
company of your colleagues and friends, it is my pleasure to present
to you today the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris
causa.
