to the United Nations' World Food Program, you have worked tirelessly
throughout your distinguished career to improve the availability
and quality of food worldwide, thereby influencing the welfare
of entire nations.
Driven
by compassion and concern for your fellow global citizens, you
have served as a strong advocate and a successful activist in
the critical fields of nutrition, food policy and safety, and
emergency food aid.
As
the first Director of the U.S. Food for Peace Program, as a member
of the U.S. Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee,
as Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human
Needs, and in your current position as Ambassador to the World
Food Program, you have mobilized public and private efforts around
nutrition and have helped people worldwide to understand its impact
on health, wealth, government and family life.
Your
service to humanity is both inspiring and heart-warming. George
McGovern, your place in history is secured by many notable achievements;
for your exceptional dedication to world nutrition, we recognize
you today.
It
is, therefore, a distinct pleasure to present to you the degree
