Tufts
President Lawrence S. Bacow awarded Agnes Varis an honorary degree
during the University's 2003 Commencement ceremonies on Sunday,
May 18, 2003
Medford/Somerville,
Mass. [05.18.03] -- Agnes Varis, where science and society
intersect, your passion and leadership flourish. Health care,
the arts, education and politics – all resonate with your
spirit.
Your
pioneering efforts in the pharmaceutical industry gave rise to
three extraordinarily successful companies. You helped to create
the generic drug industry that has lowered the cost of health
care for millions of people throughout the world. Your advocacy
for patients with rare diseases has brought to market affordable
drugs to those with uncommon needs.
In
both politics and science, you have encouraged talented women
to push aside gender barriers, as you have done throughout your
own life, to create a cadre of new leaders for the new century.
A
wonderful patron of the arts, you have supported great opera,
great theater, and great orchestras throughout the country. Passionate
about animal welfare, you have provided wise guidance, counsel
and support for both our School of Veterinary Medicine, and the
university at large.
Agnes
Varis, for your powerful commitment to active citizenship which
is so generously expressed in every aspect of your life, it is
my honor to present to you today the degree of Doctor of Public
Service, Honoris Causa.
