Boston, Mass. --
According to the Boston Herald, the new "patients" at
Tufts' School of Dental Medicine are a dentist's dream. While they
might not be real, these high-tech simulators are pretty close --
and Tufts is the first school to bring them to New England.
According
to the Herald, "The head and shoulder mannequin rests in
a chair made by a company that sells equipment for real dentist
offices. It's just a prototype now. But it and 76 others will be
ready for students next fall."
The
high-tech equipment will allow dental students to practice on extremely
realistic simulators, complete with teeth than can be drilled or
filled, running water and suction. "One of the more difficult things
for a student moving from a clinical to a pre-clinical setting is
learning to work with water," Tufts' Dr. Roger Galburt told the
Herald. "With this, they can do it from day one."
