Speakers Addressing Tufts' Professional Schools Include:

Madeleine Albright: Tufts' Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy

Madeleine Korbel Albright was nominated by President Clinton on December 5, 1996. After being unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, she was sworn in as the 64th Secretary of State on January 23, 1997. Albright was the first female to hold the position and the highest ranking woman in the U.S. government. Prior to her appointment, Albright served as the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations (the second woman to do so) and as a member of President Clinton's Cabinet and National Security Council. Roy Blount: Tufts' School of Veterinary Medicine

Roy Blount Jr. wears many hats: he is a humorist, sportswriter, poet, performer, lecturer, dramatist, and the author of twelve books. After a brief stint in the Army he worked as a reporter, columnist, and part-time English instructor in Atlanta before becoming a writer and editor for Sports Illustrated in 1968. In 1975 he left Sports Illustrated and, after publishing three articles in The Atlantic Monthly in 1981, became a contributing editor to the magazine the following year. In his writing for The Atlantic, Blount has reported on everything from the civil-rights movement to the Ku Klux Klan, from Saturday Night Live to Elvis's funeral. Blount has also worked on the stage; his one-man show at the American Palace Theatre -- later expanded into Roy Blount's Happy Hour and a Half -- was described by The New Yorker as "the most humorous and engaging fifty minutes in town." Blount's writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The New Yorker, Playboy, Vanity Fair, GQ, Rolling Stone, and National Geographic. His most recent book, Roy Blount's Book of Southern Humor (1994), contains overs 150 short stories, sketches, essays, poems, memoirs, and lyrics. Blount currently resides in New York City. Dan Glickman: Tufts' Nutrition School

Currently a partner at a Washington public law and policy firm, Dan Glickman spent six years as the Secretary of Agriculture under the Clinton Administration. Under his leadership, the department modernized food safety regulations, forged international trade agreements to expand U.S. markets, and improved its commitment to fairness and equality in civil rights. Prior to taking his post at the USDA, Glickman served as a Congressman for 18 years, representing Kansas' 4th Congressional District. Focused on food safety and the role of biotechnology while Secretary of Agriculture, Glickman also co-chaired the Presidential Food Safety Council. [Read More]

Roderick MacKinnon: Tufts' Medical & Sackler Schools

An award -winning scientist, Dr. Roderick MacKinnon has produced groundbreaking research detailing the way the body's electrical systems function, by unlocking the secrets of the body's ion channel proteins. Described by Science Magazine as "one of the 10 biggest science stories of 1998," MacKinnon's work earned him one of science's top honors -- the Albert Lasker Basic Medical research Award. The nation's most distinguished honor for outstanding contributions to basic and clinical medical research, the prizes are often called "America's Nobels." [Read More]

Richard Valachovic: Tufts' Dental School

Richard Valachovic has been the executive director of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) since 1997. Prior to assuming his ADEA position, Valachovic was at Harvard University, most recently as chief of dentistry of the Harvard University Health Services and dental director of the Harvard University Group Health. During his 20-year tenure at Harvard, he also served as associate professor of oral medicine and diagnostic sciences, associate dean for clinical affairs, associate dean for government and community affairs, and director of postdoctoral education at the School of Dental Medicine. Valachovic is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a fellow of the American College of Dentists. He has served as president of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and on several state and national advisory panels.
