Martha Whiting Named Coach Of The Year
Tufts Soccer Coach, Alum Ends Record-Breaking Season With Top Coaching Honors

Medford/Somerville, Mass. -- After coaching the Tufts women's soccer team to its best record in history and the NCAA finals, Martha Whiting was named Coach of the Year. The honor, voted on by the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association -- is the latest achievement for the highly successful former player and coach.

"Dre Licari was a great assistant coach, so the award is partly hers," said Whiting, who grew up in nearby Wakefield. "The players, too, deserve a piece of it. We just had so much fun this season. We came together on and off the field in a way that was truly wonderful to watch."

While a student at Tufts, Whiting set a University record with 385 career saves as the Jumbo's goalkeeper. Whiting was an assistant coach on the 1998 Tufts team that won the NCAA New England Championship under Coach Bill Gehling. Gehling was promoted to Athletic Director at Tufts in 1999 and Whiting replaced him after six seasons as his assistant.

This season, she led the team to an 18-4-1 record and a spot in the NCAA women's soccer finals. In an extremely close match, the Tufts team lost the game in the final three seconds.
