Rover Begins Journey
Last
week, NASA’s robot explorer Spirit made a celebrated landing
on Mars – sending back breathtaking photographs and capturing
headlines worldwide. According to John Callas, 1981 Tufts graduate
and science manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the
NASA team is amazed by how well the rover has done – and is
excitedly overseeing the Spirit’s first trip on Martian soil.

Mars
This month, NASA’s landing of the Spirit rover on Mars captured
the imagination of millions of onlookers. Now, Tufts chemistry professor
Samuel Kounaves is part of a team overseeing the next step of NASA’s
mars exploration program. In 2007, the scientists plan to launch
the Phoenix – the first rover to undertake chemical analysis
on the Red Planet since the 1970s Viking crafts.>>>

Did
You Know?
The east wing of Barnum Hall is named after alum and former professor
Fred Dayton Lambert -- a botanist who spent more than 40 years living
and working at Tufts. The Tufts professor, who resided at 120 Packard
Ave. on the Medford/Somerville campus, once remarked to a friend,
"I sleep on Packard Avenue. I live in Barnum Museum."
Lambert, a "triple-Jumbo" who earned his bachelors, masters
and doctoral degrees at the University, also died there -- at his
desk -- in 1931.

With
a plethora of politically-themed films including "Fahrenheit
9/11," "The Manchurian Candidate," and "Control
Room" hitting theaters, the summer's most talked-about movies
aren't the typical sequels and big-budget action flicks. But it's
no surprise to Tufts professor Barbara Grossman, who says that the
highly-charged election season has helped bring politics to the
big screen. |

It's
a very frightening world, and there's a great deal at stake in the
coming elections, whatever your political proclivities.
