A Caretaker In The Community
As caretaker of the historic Brooks Estate in Medford, Mass., Tufts graduate student Josh Berkowitz is helping to preserve a community treasure.
Medford/Somerville, Mass. [10.26.06] With two historic buildings and more than 50 acres of open space, the Brooks Estate is what Tufts graduate student Josh Berkowitz describes as "an amazing treasure." Nestled nearby Oak Grove cemetery in West Medford, the estate--which includes walking trails and a pond--was settled in the mid-1600s.
Interested in both community development and conservation, Berkowitz, a student in Tufts' Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning program and a staff member at the Global Development and Environment Institute, recently took up residence at the estate as its caretaker. Through his new role, he says he hopes to strengthen the connection between the estate and Tufts.
