Research has shown that different racial and ethnic backgrounds react differently to certain drugs, but significant studies have proven difficult due to the fact that minorities are severely underrepresented in clinical trials. Researcher Kenneth Getz of Tufts’Center for the Study of Drug Development recently addressed this issue in an editorial to The Washington Post.

African American, Latino and Asian populations account for about one-third of all Americans, but less than one-tenth of U.S. clinical trial participants come from these groups.
